Even those who went out of their way to receive a “nutrition degree” is falsely educated on what it really means to stay healthy.
I figured, screw it, I’m gonna do my own experiments and see what suits me best.
I did the IIFYM (if it fits your macros) diet, a low fat high carb diet, and of course, the ketogenic diet.
Being someone who exercises a lot, I was told by countless people that I needed carbs if I wanted to perform optimally.
They couldn’t be any further from the truth.
You’re probably in the same position I was in a couple years ago.
You had this belief that the only way to make the gains in the gym, drop body fat, and look sexy is by eating as low fat as possible while eating carbs to “fuel your workouts”.
Because fats make you fat, right?
While every diet regimen out there can definitely make you lose weight, some diets can do some serious damage to your metabolism and hormonal function.
I used to follow a strict low fat high carb diet. And it worked, I had a six pack and looked good with my shirt off. But my testosterone levels were complete shit. I had no energy to do anything and I felt like a plank of wood. Lifeless.
It wasn’t until I began to follow a low carb high fat ketogenic diet did I start to have awesome energy levels and STILL look physically great.
I realized that being in a state of ketosis gave me the most energy and mental clarity.
What Is Ketosis?
Ketosis is a
State where your body’s energy comes from ketones. This is achieved by restricting carbohydrates. By cutting carbs out, your body can no longer function off of glucose and begins to produce ketone bodies. Ketones are known to be the more effective and efficient form of energy. By eating a low carb high fat diet, your body turns into a “fat-burning” mode.
Ever since I discovered ketosis, it’s completely changed my relationship with food.
I’m no longer trying to eat every 3 hours, nor am I craving carbs, nor am I getting tired in the middle of the afternoon. It’s crazy that the simple shift from becoming a fat-burner rather than depending on carbs could change my life so much. The thing is, you still have to put in the work. There’s going to be the days where you’re craving every damn carb in sight.
There’ll be the days where all you want to do is plop your ass on the couch, open up a bag of chips then maybe go for some cookies afterwards.
But it does get easier.
Especially with exogenous ketones because they allow your body to stay in a fat-adapted state even when if you’ve had a little carb bender.
With that being said, I’m going to explain what are exogenous ketones? And how they can help you to start your keto-adaptation.
What Are Ketones?
First off, there are two types of ketones:
- Endogenous Ketones
- Exogenous Ketones
Endogenous Ketones are ketones that are produced inside your body. They are created when you begin to restrict carbs and eat high in fats. It is the “internal” source of ketones.
Ketones are used by our mitochondria in order to generate energy. Your body can only produce energy from either glucose or from ketones. When you deprive your body of carbs, you begin to utilize ketones instead.
There are 3 different ketone bodies that is produced inside our body.
- beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB)
- Acetoacetate (ACA)
BHB is the most stable of ketone bodies and is generally the ketone that most exogenous ketone supplements are made out of.
Think of BHB as the finest top shelf vodka money can buy. It will get you to where you want to be with no hangover. It’s just a great addition for your goals.
What Are Exogenous Ketones?
By supplementing with exogenous ketones, you can begin to feel the benefits of being in a ketogenic state without having to worry about restricting your carbs too much or eating super high in fats.
It’s like the quick shortcut to ketosis.
As stated before, most, if not all exogenous ketones are made from BHB. This is because it’s the most stable form of ketone body. It’s also usually prepared with a salt base.
Exogenous ketones helps your body become a well-oiled machine.
Picture this, imagine you’ve been on another one of your carb benders and spent the weekend drinking beer / wine and snacking on donuts / grapes.
You wake up the day after feeling like you just got hit by a truck.

What Are The Benefits Of Exogenous Ketones?
Exogenous ketones come with a crap ton of benefits that may almost seem too good to be true. Fact of the matter is, converting into a keto-adapted state has cured a host of health diseases and you will begin to see even more science backed studies popping up every day.
Using exogenous ketones will help with:
- Heals The Brain. Also known as neurogenesis and neuroplasticity, being in ketosis helps with keeping your brain functioning at the most optimal rate possible. Diseases such as Alzheimer’s are negated by adopting a ketogenic diet.
- Think about it, our brain is made up of up to 65% fat. By feeding your body and brain the proper healthy fats it needs, you’ll be on the right track to curing all sorts of metabolic diseases.
- Exogenous ketones also significantly help with focus. There is more research being done on ketosis on people with ADHD or Autism. There is promising evidence that using exogenous ketones helps with almost every neurological disease out there. I’m not saying that it is the cure to everything, but it is certainly the right step towards health.
- Anti-Inflammatory. The science is already out there showing how a ketogenic diet helps with inflammation. As we all know, inflammation is the root cause to a crap ton of illnesses. This is especially good for athletes as well.
- Cancer fighting. Evidence shows that there are anti-carcinogenic properties when your body begins to burn ketones for energy. On top of this, cancer cells feed off of glucose so when there aren’t any present, the cancer cells die off.
- Increased Cognition. You will know when you’re in a ketotic state just by the sheer amount of focus you experience. I personally use exogenous ketones more frequently when I’m lacking the proper focus I need on some days. If I know that I’m going to have a stressful day at work and need to be mentally sharp, I always make sure to take a serving of exogenous ketones.
- Boosted Athletic Performance. Using exogenous ketones greatly impacts your energy levels. Endurance runners especially will benefit. Instead of running on glucose storages, by ingesting exogenous ketones and becoming fat-adapted, you will have a lot more fuel in the tank to run for longer periods of time.

Exogenous ketones are becoming more popular as time goes on. Especially with the recent boom in the ketogenic diet industry, they will only improve each and every day.
I’ve been using exogenous ketones to drive myself back into ketosis any time I’ve had a lot of carbs. I also recommend them to my clients in order to speed up the process of keto-adaptation.
Again, you need to figure out what works best for you, but in my personal opinion, most if not all people can benefit from supplementing with exogenous ketones.
I like to compare exogenous ketones to having a personal trainer.
You can either go in the gym and lolligag around jumping from one machine to the other and not really having a plan. Sure, you’ll get results, but it will definitely take a while.
OR, you can get a personal trainer who will show you everything you need to do (if they’re good) in order to achieve the results you want.
Exogenous ketones are almost the same way, by supplementing with them, you’ll know right away what it feels like to be in a ketogenic state. You’ll simply skip the whole “induction phase” step of the ketogenic diet that everyone cries about.
